• Zayn Malik has delivered an angry message to the Grammy Awards, five days before this year’s music ceremony is due to take place.
  • Nor as a solo act neither with One Direction, Malik has never been nominated.
  • The Grammys voting process is famously complicated, with review committees holding the ultimate say in 72 categories, effectively overruling the votes of the general public.

Zayn Malik tweeted, “Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s no nomination considerations. Next year I’ll send you a basket of confectionery,”

The latest album of Zayn Malik was not eligible for this year’s Grammys as it came out after the cut-off date in August. Subsequently, the singer clarified in his tweet that his comments were not personal nor they were about eligibility. Rather he said that his concerns were about all people, regardless of anything have the right to be respected and appreciated as valuable members of the industry. Furthermore, his concerns were about the lack of transparency of the nomination process. He says the current system allows favoritism, racism, and networking politics to influence voting (Savage, 2021).

His comments echo those of The Weeknd, who accused Grammy’s organizers of being “corrupt” after he was snubbed in this year’s nominations. The star’s hit single Blinding Lights has now spent a record-breaking 52 weeks in the US top 10, and he was widely expected to be among the main contenders. Instead, he was overlooked in all 84 categories (Savage, 2021).

The Canadian singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, called it “an attack”.

“I’m not a cocky person. I’m not arrogant. People told me I was going to get nominated. The world told me,” he told Billboard magazine. “We were all very confused.”

Significant Complications

The Grammys voting process is famously complicated, with review committees holding the ultimate say in 72 categories, effectively overruling the votes of the general public. Last year, the president of the Recording Academy, which hosts the event, claimed to have proof of “significant” voting irregularities. Deborah Dugan made her accusations after being put on administrative leave due to misconduct allegations. She said her dismissal was revenge for speaking out against workplace discrimination, such as sexual assault and rigged voting procedures. Malik has a tense relationship with the Grammys. He was excluded from the best new artist award in 2017 due to his success with One Direction. “This was pretty clear cut,” Bill Freimuth, chief awards officer at the Recording Academy, said at the time.

Moreover, Malik’s duet with Taylor Swift, I Don’t Wanna Live Forever, from the movie Fifty Shades Darker, did receive a nomination for best song written for visual media in 2018. Though, that award recognizes the songwriters (Swift, Jack Antonoff, and Sam Dew) rather than the performers. The star’s third album, Nobody Is Listening, which came out in January, will be eligible for consideration next year. However, it did not make the top 40 in the United States (Savage, 2021).

Upcoming 63rd Grammys Ceremony

On Sunday, the 63rd Grammy Awards will be held in Los Angeles, with special staging to accommodate the pandemic period. There will be four stages in total, each with a small group of performers, nominees, and guests, as well as the fifth stage for presenters. The stages have been set in a circle, with a smaller crew filming the proceedings in the middle. Beyoncé is the most nominated artist, with nine, including four for Black Parade, a protest anthem released during last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests. Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift both have six nominations – with Swift hopeful of winning album of the year for a record-breaking third time for her first lockdown album Folklore. Performers on the night will include Cardi B, BTS, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, Haim, Megan Thee Stallion, and Malik’s former bandmate Harry Styles, who is nominated for three awards.
