Cillian Murphy’s upcoming film Oppenheimer has officially added Robert Downey Jr. and Matt Damon to its cast. This news comes shortly after Emily Blunt was confirmed to star in the Universal film, which will be directed by Christopher Nolan. Oppenheimer has now become one of the most anticipated upcoming feature films, with a release date of 2023. Robert J. Oppenheimer, a physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project, was dubbed the “Father of the Atomic Bomb.” The plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being, but the storey is expected to dramatise the creation of the nuclear weapon (Navarro, 2021).
Cillian Murphy will play the theoretical physicist who assisted in the development of the atomic bomb during WWII. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Emily Blunt will play Oppenheimer’s wife, Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project, the U.S. research initiative that developed the first atomic bomb, will be played by Matt Damon. Lewis Strauss, the infamous chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission who initiated hearings questioning Oppenheimer’s loyalty to the United States and famously had the scientist’s security clearance revoked, will be played by Robert Downey Jr.
Kai Bird and the late Martin J
Christopher Nolan has been confirmed to direct and write the script for the upcoming film. His wife, Emma Thomas, has been cast as a producer alongside Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven. The upcoming Universal project is based on Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The book won the Pulitzer Prize after it was published in 2005. Universal will release Oppenheimer theatrically in North America and distribute it worldwide (Navarro, 2021).
The Release of Oppenheimer
In a bidding war with Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros., Universal recently won the rights to the upcoming project. Christopher Nolan had ended his 20-year relationship with Warner Bros. by choosing to work with Universal on his next film. His long-standing relationship with Warner Bros., which has previously backed all of his biggest films, became strained during the COVID-19 pandemic. It happened as the studio announced that its 2021 slate would all premiere on HBO Max on the same day as their respective theatrical releases. The upcoming Universal film is scheduled to be released on July 21, 2023. Oppenheimer also has a production budget of $100 million. This storey was first reported by Variety (Navarro, 2021).
